Ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids are what the skin barrier is built from, and a moisturiser that supplies them is doing the work. The drugstore tubs list them near the top. The expensive jars list them too, then add fragrance, a better texture and the weight of the glass. Texture is a real thing to want. It is not a different mechanism.
The cheap ones smell faintly of nothing and sit heavier on the skin. If a particular expensive formula is the only one your face tolerates, that is a real reason to keep buying it.
