Citric acid

Instead of branded descaler

~$12 for two pounds against ~$8 a bottle

Most descalers are a dilute acid, usually this one, with colour and scent added.

IngredientsA list short enough to read aloud and defend.ValueThe same job for less money.

Limescale is calcium carbonate, and calcium carbonate dissolves in acid. Citric is the acid most descaling products are built on, and buying the powder means mixing the strength you need rather than paying freight on water. A kettle, a showerhead and the washing machine all take the same treatment.

What you give up

It etches calcium carbonate, which is what limescale is and also what marble, travertine and limestone are. Keep it off stone and off any polished finish you care about.

What to get

Some of these are Amazon affiliate links, and buying through one earns Yojo Dojo a small commission at no extra cost to you. Where a maker sells direct, the link goes there instead and usually pays less. Prices are rough, not live, and nothing on this page paid to be here.
